Algae, its causes, prevention and remedy
A big turn down in a beautiful aquarium

Conclusion

Many other types algae also exist, and most outbreaks are result of excess nitrates from too many fishes and infrequent water changes, dirty filters, or CO2/light imbalances. They can be largely prevented by cultivating the following good habits.

  • Don't put fishes into an aquarium right away. Wait rather for the plants' roots to take hold and new buds to appear, than add the fishes a few at a time.

  • Change the water immediately you notice that substrate fertilizer is seeping into the water.

  • Use a large filter box, and at the beginning use three parts activated charcoal to one part bacteria filtration. Bacteria culture on a hard surface is best.

  • In the early stages, there are not enough bacteria and the pH value is high, lower it with increase CO2 injection. DO NOT USE chemicals to lower the pH value as it will cause adverse effect on the water quality.

  • Keep the temperature low during the early stages of the aquarium, around 22-23°C. The ideal temperature for most aquatic plants is 24-25°C.

  • Don't use liquid fertilizers soon after planting. Wait until roots have taken and new growth appears. Use a lot of long-stemmed plants in the background at first. They will absorb excess nutrients and, as they grow, they serve to regulate the amount of light. After the rest of the intended aquatic plants has established, you can gradually remove the plants that you don't need.

  • Keep sufficient Otocinclus and yamato numa-ebi shrimp in the aquarium from the start to prevent algae growth. As a guide line, keep about 20 Otocinclus and 50 Yamato-numa-ebi (Caridina Japonica) to every 100 litres of water for them to work effectively
