Fierce Husband and Headband's Babies Growing Stages...

8th August 2001 - Spawning (When I was sleeping) :: Once again I didn't catch them in action, but this time they spawned in a 2-feet tank I set aside for them to breed in. The spawn was an average one. I tried to count to no avail and I estimated the number of eggs to be approximately 200. I was glad after all with their vigour and eagerness to spawn. Too bad they aren't some Solid Red or Leopard Snake. Hehe! Nonetheless I was happy!

10th - This was my fourth spawning among all my pairs. Therefore, I was well prepared and knew what to expect and provide. I needed to do a 70% water change everyday. That would keep the tank clean. As you can see there are some slime on the tank surfaces, those slime contains bacteria and are needed to be cleaned away.

11th August - Hatching :: The eggs hatched after 3 days at room temperature. Now the eggs turn into some little wrigglers. They still have their egg sacs attached to them. They would remain attached to the side of the tank for one more day as the parents continue to fan them with their pectoral fins.

13th - After two days after hatching, the fries start to get naughthy! They begin to detach themselves and swim around the tank. The parents have to be skillfull here. They would go around the tank picking the young up into their mouths and blowing them back on the side. They are encouraging to stay at the side and not danger themselves elsewhere.

14th - Discus Milk Feeding:: It was cool that they hatched. Today they were starting to feed on the parent's mucus. It's called Discus milk. Hehe... It has the nourishment needed by the fries to grow quickly. The parents take turns to feed the young. To do that they have to transfer the fries across to each other. In order to transfer, they make a graceful turn away from the other parent fish. The fries would always go to the nearest body they can feed on. You can then see the fries hurrying to the other parent. So cute!

>> Now more experienced, they go about taking good care of their new batch of fries. Their 2nd batch in fact.
